Similarly, Lisa’s creation in Weird Science directly represents the
story of American foundation. Though the neither story is perfectly analogous
to the other, Gary and Wyatt’s purpose and motivation in creating Lisa is
parallel to many reasons that early settlers wanted establish America, reasons
that CEFW focus on in their own works. In Weird Science, The problem
that motivates Gary and Wyatt to create Lisa is, as Gary says, “nobody likes
us” (Hughes Weird Science). In comparison, Winthrop writes that settlers
are motivated “to seek out a place of cohabitation and consortship under a due
form of government both civil and ecclesiastical…” (Winthrop A Model of
Christian Charity). In both cases, hope seems to lie in establishing and
creating something new rather than settling for the old reality. Furthermore,
both Winthrop and Hughes present their characters as weak before their
creation. For example, Winthrop believes that his followers were formerly weak;
however, America and specifically the religious freedom it allows will help his
congregants “be the better preserved from the common corruptions of this evil world”
(Winthrop A Model of Christian Charity). Hughes, similarly, presents
Wyatt and Gary as lost causes without the help of Lisa, their own version of
Winthrop’s America.
