Miss America

America was a remarkable creation that brought the colonists a great sense of pride. When one thinks of early America, the first thing that comes to his or her mind is most likely not John Hughes’s Movie Weird Science. In Weird Science, two teenaged boys named Gary and Wyatt are frustrated because they are unpopular, and unwanted by the female population at their school. In order to solve this problem, they decide to make a computer generated girl to help them master the art of wooing females. The product, whom they name Lisa, is the combination of every good aspect of every woman they could think of. Just like America to the colonists, she is Gary and Wyatt’s remarkable creation. Lisa can represent America in the eyes of the colonists because she brings her creators pride, similar to how America brought the colonists lots of honor.  In John Winthrop’s sermon, “A Model of Christian Charity,” he states, “For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us” (Winthrop 3). At this point in time, America was the center of attention. All eyes were faced towards it, waiting to see if it would succeed or fail. John Winthrop was adamant that the colony did not fail, for his pride would be severely damaged.  In Weird Science, Everyone who sees Lisa cannot take his or her eye off of her. She is like the “city upon the hill” because she is an awe striking creation, and becomes the center of attention among the kids at Gary and Wyatt’s school. Although Early America and Lisa, the flawless computer generated girl, are very different, they do have some clear relations. They are both admired, desired, and a fusion of different people. It is interesting that these two distinct creations are so dissimilar yet have many similarities.

2014 Lisa really lost her charm...
