A Forced Phenomenon; Ethnic Notions Response
We see language and diction misrepresented everywhere in today’s society. The use of this language through media and entertainment shapes our views by promoting negative stereotypes, misrepresenting cultures, and putting derogatory terms in the wrong context. The most influential genre of music in today’s society is Hip-Hop, and within these songs, the use of the word ‘nigger’ is constantly used. This is an unfortunate reality seeing as the target audience that this genre of music attracts is people between the ages of 15-25. Through these mediums, our views of race and gender are manipulated by these misrepresentations. Not only do these mediums manipulate our views, but they also encourage and condone our actions. These false representations on gender, race and culture, are now embedded within society due to the media, people of power, and their use of language. This is a serious issue that must be addressed and taken care of as quickly as possible.
